Beauty sleep is an idea everyone’s heard of, but the facts behind it aren’t so well known. The reality is, having proper and good quality sleep can be fantastic for your skin, making you look and feel younger and also making you healthier!
During the day, UV light from the sun and free radicals (such as pollen dust and fumes from pollution) can lead to imbalance and poor health for your skin. Poor sleep also leads to poor water balance and dehydration, which can show as dark circles or puffiness under the eyes. This is why your skin can look drab, tired, and lifeless or more aged if you don’t get enough sleep and rest!
While sleeping, we have warmth and increased blood circulation to the skin, which clears away waste products and brings more hydration and nutrients to the deeper layers of your skin. During sleep, your skin also reforms proteins and elastins.
But getting the right amount of sleep is very important, and varies depending on age:
7-8 hours minimum for adults
9-10 for teenagers
And at least 10 for younger children
You don’t want to give the day’s pore-clogging irritants the chance to sink in and do damage overnight. This can cause large pores, dry skin, rashes, infections, inflammation, or acne outbreaks. So make sure to get into the habit of cleansing your face and removing any makeup before bed!
Applying night time skincare afterwards; new collagen (the protein that keeps your skin strong and elastic) is made by your body overnight, meaning any product applied to your skin is absorbed much easier and increased its effectiveness.
Sleeping with hairbands on can cause extra stress on your skin and hair follicles, and cause strain which might thin out hair and cause breakage. Taking them off before you go to bed can improve both air and blood flow to the scalp, allowing the scalp to move freely.
Sleeping on your back is the best way to sleep; it reduces the risk of pillow marks on the face and any distortion of the skin which can increase fine lines and wrinkles, and the even weight distribution provided makes it less likely for wrinkles to develop.
