The Benefits of Micro-Needling

The benefits of micro-needling are hugely impressive and appear in many forms. From fine lines and wrinkles to acne scarring and pigmentation, the application of micro-needling can be tailored to address almost any skincare concern you may have.

What Is It?

Micro-needling is the perfect treatment to help nurture and stimulate the production of both collagen and elastin. Both of these are naturally found in the body and function to aid more youthful-looking skin. If you are looking for a safe, non-ablative treatment, you may want to include Collagen induction therapy into your treatment plan.

How Does It Work?

Micro-needling uses tiny micro-needles to create small punctures on the top layer of the skin to penetrate layers of skin at certain depths below the Strateum Corneum (The outer most layer of skin.) These wounds “traumatise” the skin and trigger the body’s natural response of creating more collagen and elastin to heal the wounds. Left behind is improved texture and firmness, a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks.

Depth 0.25 – 1.5mm: Over the course of your micro-needling, we will work from a depth of 0.25mm to 1.5mm. At 1.5mm the micro-needles go down to the basal layer which is part of the Dermis (the deepest layer for this treatment) where scar tissue fibres hold tension (this tension is what creates the texture of stretch marks and scar tissue.) Penetrating the basal layer releases the tension held by the fibres – kick starting the production of Elastin and Collagen which through continued treatment will visibly reduce colouration, texture and size of stretch marks, wrinkles, sun damage, scars and other skincare concerns.

Alongside, this we use a transdermal solution bespoke to your needs containing skin essential nutrients, vitamins and actives to treat the lower layers of your skin effectively. It can treat a range of skin problems from wrinkles and fine lines to enlarged pores and acne or chickenpox scars. It can also help repair sun damage to the face, pigmentation and even help with cellulite and stretch marks.

What’s the Procedure?

The proton pen containing a single-use sterile micro-needle cartridge is used to gently create micro-wounds on your face and neck. These tiny punctures alert your skin to go into repair mode and effectively send a message to rejuvenate your skin and create new, healthy skin cells. Encouraging your body to produce elastin and collagen will result in plumped up skin and improved skin texture.

Medical Micro-Needling is an option that even those with a fear of needles can consider, as they are so small that we can even use them around the delicate eye area. We can tailor this kind of skin treatment to your exact needs. It is advisable to visit for a course of three to five treatments, spaced across four to six-week intervals. I will formulate a fully bespoke treatment plan for you upon consultation.

It is usual to expect some initial redness after treatment that will disappear after 48 hours. The effects of micro skin needling can last anywhere from two to three months after one treatment or have longer-term effects with a series of treatments.

Whether you want revitalised glowing skin, help with scars, pigmentation, uneven texture/tone or want to incorporate this treatment into your plan, we can discuss further.

Stretch marks appear most commonly in places like: Abdominal wall, Thighs, Upper arms, Buttocks and Breasts. The cause of stretch marks also varies in situations like: pregnancy, sudden gain/loss of weight, rapid growth, hereditary, stress, changes in physical conditions, etc.

When it comes to your skin, there are 3 different layers: the epidermis (outer), the dermis (middle), and the subcutaneous/hypodermic (deepest). Stretch marks occur in the dermis when the connective tissue is “stretched” beyond its power of flexibility. As it stretches, the collagen weakens and the normal production to keep the skin youthful is disrupted. What is left behind is the appearance of lighter skin, some redness at first, as well as what may look like bruising within the mark.

What’s the Recovery Process?

The natural healing process of the skin happens in three phases and can take anywhere between 2-7 days:

Phase 1: Inflammation – Once the skin is pierced, it triggers the response from the immune system to naturally disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase the blood flow, and create new tissue.

Phase 2: Proliferation – The wound starts to rebuild itself with the new cells and the temporary collagen and elastin, as well as a new network of blood vessels.

Phase 3: Remodelling – The collagen produced in Phase 2 is replaced by even stronger collagen, allowing the skin to contract and create a tightening effect on the skin.

What Are The Benefits of Micro-Needling?

1. Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles:

No one wants to look older than they are. But premature ageing that presents as fine lines and wrinkles does just that. The tiny injuries from a micro-needling session boost collagen and elastin production to fight lines and wrinkles.

Collagen and elastin are compounds in your skin that add structure and strength, lending a youthful quality. The wound-healing mechanisms also stimulate your body to produce new skin cells, making fine lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles less apparent.

2. Scar treatment:

Because micro-needling stimulates collagen and elastin production, it’s also super effective in addressing acne and other scars on your skin. The only type of scar not possible to treat is keloid, or raised, scars.

3. Helps reduce and repair sun damage:

Micro-needling is effective in reducing the appearance of sun damage, particularly hyperpigmentation and age spots. If you have a blotchy, brownish complexion, which is probably a result of too many days of sunning, micro-needling and its ability to stimulate new collagen and skin cells can reinvigorate your look and even out your tone.

4. Anti-ageing:

Ageing doesn’t just show up as wrinkles and discolouration. As you get older, your skin loses its elasticity, so it appears lax. Ageing skin may also look dull and lack a lustrous glow. Micro-needling can change this.

The buildup of collagen that occurs in response to the tiny wounds can improve skin structure to fight sagging. Plus, just 24 hours following a session, you experience a radiant, fresh glow.

5. Visibly reduces pores:

Despite the fact that micro-needling involves punching holes in your skin, it doesn’t increase the size of your pores. In fact, it helps your pores appear much smaller. When the collagen around your pores is stimulated, the area around each pore plumps, making the pore itself almost disappear.

6. Improves the effectiveness of your other topical products:

Post micro-needling is the prime time to apply anti-aging treatments, moisturisers, and other topical treatments that boost skin health and appearance. The micro-holes receive creams, serums, and gels more readily and deliver them deeper into your dermis than when applied regularly.

7. Helps reduce and prevent stretch marks:

Micro-needling works just about anywhere on your body. It can be effective in reducing the appearance of stretch marks that show up after periods of rapid growth, such as during pregnancy.

8. Visibly reduce rosacea:

The ruddiness and skin thickening of rosacea can be addressed with micro-needling. If you suffer from this skin condition, you experience a hastened breakdown of collagen. Micro-needling stimulates the growth of collagen to offset and replace this breakdown, so your skin looks less inflamed and irritated.

9. Visibly reduce acne:

Because of the improved delivery of topical applications, you can use micro-needling to help improve the effectiveness of topical acne treatments. Regular micro-needling applications at Signature Skin Care can help your skin clear up.
